Importance of Micro Climate Control in Conservation

Micro Climate control is Essential for conserving artefacts because it helps prevent deterioration.

Artefact materials vary by nature, each reacting differently to temperature and humidity changes. In addition, the variation in temperature and humidity due to external factors like climate and internal (to a building) factors like lighting and visitors change artefacts’ size and mechanical properties, irreversibly damaging them.

For example, high humidity can cause mould to grow on organic materials like wood, canvas, parchment and paper. On the other hand, low humidity can cause them to become brittle and break as their moisture content tends to balance with the humidity of the surrounding air.

Climate control helps maintain a stable environment and prevents deterioration.

The ideal temperature for most artefacts is between 20-22℃ (68 – 72 °F) and relative humidity of 40-50%. While the ideal temperature and humidity we have specified are general, artefact requirements vary depending on their constituent material.

Mostly artefacts are kept in glass display cases or storage cabinets. In such a situation, air conditioning, HVAC, or using a portable dehumidifier may not work. The best solution is micro climate control. Controlling relative humidity inside display cases or storage cabinets can give a better and longer solution.
